Australia Day celebrations

Australia Day 2019 Award winners

Fun-run and colour-run participants made up the bulk of the crowd at the local Australia Day observance on the Derwent Esplanade at New Norfolk. There were big numbers for the two running events which bookended the local celebrations. The day kicked off with the fun run and walk at 10am and finished with the colour run around 1pm.

Great musical entertainment was provided by the emerging artists of the Derwent Valley Concert Band’s intermediate band, with local group The Sign (Jo and Paul Volta) also performing some old favourites.

Food and drink vans and the Lions Club barbecue kept everyone refreshed as the local temperature began to climb towards 24 degrees. Fun and games for children was provided by the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D’FAT) and the Bridgewater PCYC.

There was great interest in the address given by Australia Day Ambassador Diana Butler, of Launceston, who grew up in the Derwent Valley. Mrs Butler also performed the flag raising while the Derwent Valley Concert Band played the national anthem.

The ambassador’s address was followed by the presentation of the local Australia Day Awards as follows:

Young Citizen of the Year: Alesha Moles, of Black Hills
Citizen of the Year: Martyn Evans, of Magra
Junior Sports Person of the Year: Lauren Banks, of New Norfolk
Sports Group of the Year: New Norfolk Cricket Club
Community Event of the Year: New Norfolk Christmas Group
