The best tasting tap water in Tasmania can be enjoyed by the residents of New Norfolk and visitors to the town.
All Tasmanian water treatment plants competed against each another for the 2018 Ixom Best Tasting Tap Water in Tasmania competition. The water Industry Operators Association of Australia (WIOA) event was held in Launceston in late July. In year-six of competition, water samples from treatment plants around the state were judged by their peers on appearance, odour and taste.
After surviving the heats and going into the grand final against two other Southern Tasmanian samples, the sample from Bryn Estyn Water Treatment Plant that provides drinking water to over 200,000 residents in Greater Hobart was judged as having the Best Tasting Tap Water in Tasmania.
The award represents a major achievement for the plant following a huge improvement in water quality standards. After less than glowing results in previous years Bryn Estyn, which is located on the River Derwent west of New Norfolk, will now represent Tasmania at the national WIOA competition in Queensland in October 2018.
The result represents a major achievement for TasWater following less than acceptable results in previous years. TasWater revealed that carbon-dosing the water supply was the key to rectifying algal bloom issues. Work is ongoing in other areas of the state where standards are not being met.
