Exactly what is the Tasmanian Honour Roll for women?
The Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women recognises Tasmanian women and women’s organisations that have made a significant contribution to the State. The Honour Roll encourages people in the community to discover more about the contributions and achievements of Tasmanian women and women’s organisations throughout the State. It also preserves their stories as historical records, to ensure they are not forgotten in the passage of time and can inspire future generations. The Honour Roll includes women from all walks of life and fields of endeavour including community service, humanitarian pursuits, business, science and technology, the arts, sport, education, medicine and the environment.
Who is eligible for nomination?
Women and women’s organisations that have made a significant contribution at a local, national or international level in their field of endeavour can be nominated. Some inductees are recognised for their contribution at the grassroots level of the community; others for helping the most vulnerable people in our society. Some women are nominated in recognition of their world-class work in cutting-edge fields of science. Others are women in business who have contributed significantly to their local community. Such inductees are examples of what we can make of our lives, what we can achieve and the difference our contribution can make to a community.
I’d like to nominate someone – how do I proceed?
Nominees must be nominated by an individual other than themselves, or by an organisation. Posthumous nominations are accepted. Many women and women’s organisations do not seek acknowledgement for their contribution to their community, however, it is important that we recognise and honour these inspirational role models. Think of women or women’s organisations that have inspired you and that you feel deserve public recognition for contributing to the community. Nominations take place on a bi-annual basis.
How are decisions made on who makes the roll?
Assessments are made by an independent judging panel that reviews all nominations to determine the nominee’s suitability for inclusion on the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women. The Honour Roll induction event is an opportunity to publicly recognise and celebrate women and women’s organisations that have made a significant contribution to the State. Those inducted into the Honour Roll receive a book detailing the biographies of inductees.
